What Do Binghamton Graduates Do?

Binghamton graduates pursue careers in the private sector, with non-profit organizations as well as in local/state/federal government.  They receive advanced degrees (i.e. MS/MA/MAT, JD, PhD, MD, DO, EdD) from top universities throughout the US and abroad.

Often this question is posed relative to certain majors.  “If I major in _________ what jobs will be open to me?”  OR “What jobs have __________ majors gotten when they graduate?”  A great resource to help answer these questions is the Alumni Career Network.  Students can search to identify alumni who studied particular majors at Binghamton and see where they work, what they do, advanced degrees and more.  They can also search by profession and gain insight into the educational backgrounds possessed by alumni in various fields.  Typically this illustrates that a person can pursue various career paths through more than one specific undergraduate major.

Sometimes parents of current and prospective students ask about our ‘placement rate’.  The Career Development Center at Binghamton, like other career centers across the country, does not ‘place’ students into jobs.  We are not placement/employment agencies, but rather, we provide information, services and tools to help students get a job and/or internship.  We teach them skills for a lifetime (i.e. Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.)

The Career Development Center surveys graduating seniors in April and May about their post-graduation plans.  Data from 2007 graduates indicated their plans to be:
  • 34% graduate or professional school
  • 55% full-time employment
  • 7.6% travel, participate in a one year opportunity, and/or take part in other activities
  • Students in Harpur College of Arts and Sciences pursue graduate/professional school in greater numbers than students in the other schools (55%).  A few examples of institutions where students pursue further study:
